ESCALE and ESTELLE case-control studies

ESCALE and ESTELLE case-control studies

Both surveys were conducted a few years apart with similar protocols.

Objectives

The objective of these two studies was:

  • to study the influence, on the risk of cancer in children, of the course of pregnancy, the characteristics of the child at birth, the child’s environment in utero or during childhood, and their lifestyle.
  • to identify genetic predisposing factors.
  • to investigate potential interactions between genetic factors and environmental factors.

Methods

  • Cases were identified in pediatric oncology services; controls were recruited from telephone directories while respecting age, sex, and household size quotas.
  • The mothers of cases and controls were interviewed by telephone.
  • Blood or saliva samples were collected with informed consent.
